About Bengals

In case this is the first time you are planning to adopt a Bengal cat and are worried about what to expect then we here at Swift Katz have the answer for you.  We have put together a brief introduction below into the world of owning a Bengal kitten.

The Bengal domestic cat is a completely new breed of house cat. The first bred Bengal cat was in fact born in America. This new breed of cat was created by crossing an Asian Leopard Cat with a domestic house cat. The domestic Bengal inherits its label from the Latin name of its wild family, Felis Bengalensis (Asian Leopard Cat). Whilst the domestic Bengal has a number of similarities in appearance to the Asian Leopard cat including its DNA, the domestic Bengal’s temperament however is still domestic and not too wild.

The overall achievement in developing the domestic Bengal cat breed was to keep the beautiful markings and colours of their wild ancestor but at the same time keep all the domestic traits of a loyal and reliable family pet. The Bengal’s physical body is slightly bigger than your “average” domestic housecat, looking more toned in the muscle sense but with also slightly longer tails in order for better balance. In which allows the Bengal to jump higher, longer and run faster than the “average” housecat. Their coats differ from leopard marbling or spots on a dark browny coat, through to a snow-like light-coloured coat.

Bengal’s are loving, affectionate, playful and are full of life at any age. Their youthful spirits have them zooming around the house as if they owned it themselves. Another known fact about the Bengal is its love of the water, where as when the majority of cats are produced with water they would give you more of a look of disgust rather than play in it!
